Those who feel and who pay attention to their feelings are those who are content to struggle in a quest with no possible victory. Next, the essay progressed to Unamuno’s philosophy which rests on the need to feel and accept feelings as legitimate sources of understanding, rather than concentrating solely on scientific thought and objective facts. As an ever-present being, immortal with the ability to prolong the journey as an objective, God’s existence is that which humans desire. Just as existence is the motive for humans to live and wonder, so too does existence promote the desire for closeness with God. This is where Unamuno introduces religion into his philosophy. Humans have a desire to exist, which is why they continue struggling, knowing there is no full understanding at the end of their search. Meaning comes from the journey to understanding, rather than from understanding in itself, for once understanding is gained, there can be nothing after. An individual is his own objective, and this holds true for all individuals, for everyone seeks the same understanding of himself and of others. A man has no purpose in the world, but is a purpose in and of himself. To enable readers to understand her examination, Zito begins her essay by situating readers in a position to understand Miguel de Unamuno’s work, The Tragic Sense of Life.

While roaming the aisles, his muse “suddenly shat on head,” and his imagination conjured the image of a prehistoric bird causing chaos in the store. King and his family were living on Long Lake in Bridgton, Maine at the time, and the morning after a storm he took his son, Joe, with him for a trip to the local grocery to pick up some supplies. Of all things, it was an errand to the supermarket that finally saw the dam give way. He faced a creative drought so bad that it made him wonder if his ability to write short stories was permanently broken. The writer appreciated the “gentle diplomacy” that was applied by McCauley – calling it “the hallmark of a really good agent” – but that didn’t help get the creative juices flowing. In 1976, McCauley was gung-ho on developing a horror anthology hardcover called Dark Forces, and he doggedly pursued King to contribute a piece for the book. King describes the origins of “The Mist” in the “Notes” section of Skeleton Crew, recounting that his agent, Kirby McCauley, served as the project’s starter pistol. “The Mist” is one of the best Stephen King stories exemplifying this talent… though the author suffered through some bad writer’s block to find it. Hadrian was brave and astute–despite his sometimes prickly demeanor–as well as an accomplished huntsman, poet, and student of philosophy. Everitt vividly recounts Hadrian’s thrilling life, in which the emperor brings a century of disorder and costly warfare to a peaceful conclusion while demonstrating how a monarchy can be compatible with good governance. 76, Hadrian lived through and ruled during a tempestuous era, a time when the Colosseum was opened to the public and Pompeii was buried under a mountain of lava and ash. In Hadrian and the Triumph of Rome–the first major account of the emperor in nearly a century–Everitt presents a compelling, richly researched biography of the man whom he calls arguably “the most successful of Rome’s rulers.”īorn in A.D. Despite having, what seems like, a strange culture Netflix has thrived and revolutionised the entertainment industry. Netflix has a unique culture by rejecting the acceptable beliefs under which most companies operate. ‘No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention’ details the fast transformation of Netflix from DVD mail orders to instant streaming. Wonderfully attuned to the spiritual isolation that underlies the human condition, and with a deft sense for racial tensions in the South, McCullers spins a haunting, unforgettable story that gives voice to the rejected, the forgotten, and the mistreated - and, through Mick Kelly, gives voice to the quiet, intensely personal search for beauty. When Singer’s mute companion goes insane, Singer moves into the Kelly house, where Mick Kelly, the book’s heroine (and loosely based on McCullers), finds solace in her music. Each one yearns for escape from small town life. At its center is the deaf-mute John Singer, who becomes the confidant for various types of misfits in a Georgia mill town during the 1930s. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters’ inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers’ finest work, an enduring masterpiece first published by Houghton Mifflin in 1940. With the publication of her first novel, THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, Carson McCullers, all of twenty-three, became a literary sensation. Somebody in Philadelphia is murdering girls with blue eyes, and the Gaespora put Saru on a case to protect one particular girl, Ria, a young woman who goes through her life protected by a dog-like entity who only she can see. The highest level of society is the Gaespora, alien-ish beings who are more or less benevolent but whose motives deliberately unclear. In this world, most people have brain implants that allow them to have continuous internet access inside their brains (side-affects include getting your entire perception of reality taken over by hackers). The protagonist is a woman named Saru, a detective working in a future version of Philadelphia. This is definitely one of the best indie books I’ve read, and I’d definitely recommend it to other readers. It’s written as a mix of genres, with cyberpunk, dystopian, Lovecraftian horror, and crime noir all represented in the story. The sixth book I’m reviewing is No Dogs in Philly, the first book of the ‘Special Sin’ series by Andy Futuro. ©2011 Tiffany Snow (P)2013 Brilliance Audio, Inc.
